A positive future is possible. The potential for it lies in the creative and ultimately generative impulse that exists within every human being. If we can imagine a positive future, we can create it. But to understand how we might move from a negative present into a positive future, we must commit ourselves to constant, critical engagement with our environment and our time. Like the angel of history, we must turn toward the present, our back to the future, in order to gain clarity amid the storm that carries us endlessly forward and upward.
To hope for a positive future, to remain open to it, often requires strength, effort, and friction in the here and now. Exposing ourselves to this state again and again must be the aim and highest responsibility of our human community if we want to build a better future and a more livable society. For a true utopia, it is a manageable task.
